The Pituitary Gland...

The pituitary is the master gland of the endocrine system. It is attached to the hypothalamus (part of the brain) by a thin stalk, and is controlled by the hypothalamus. The gland secretes many hormones into the bloodstream. Some of these hormones affect all cells in the body; others target specific glands only.

Here's a list of hormones produced by the pituitary gland with a description of their function.

Hormone Function/Effect
Growth Hormone (GH) Growth of cells, fat metabolism, improved mood, increased energy levels.
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH, vasopressin) Controls water reabsorption from the kidneys, and salt balance.
Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH) Stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisone
Oxytocin Induces milk movement, and uterine contractions.
Thyrotropin (TSH) Stimulates the Thyroid gland to produce Thyroxine.
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Men - stimulates the testes to produce sperm; Women - stimulates egg formation in the ovaries.
Luteinising Hormone (LH) Men - stimulates the testes to produce Testesterone; Women - Ovulation. .
